Measuring the socio-economic impacts of a national sporting event in Oman and supporting the case for future investment into major sports events.
Context and objectives
Portas was engaged to calculate the socio-economic impact from the 2019 Muscat Marathon and to support the case to the Ministry of Health and other government entities for further investment into sporting events to help drive a healthier nation.
- Extensive data was collected via post event participation surveys, interviews and other means to calculate the numbers of participants and spectators who were inspired to be active from the event.
- Using this data and additional inputs from GDHX health database, Ministry of Health, WHO database, research papers and others, the health, societal and economic impacts of the marathon were modelled and quantified
